The Depots
The Sissons Motor Service currently operate out of two depots, Cleveland Road (Middlesbrough)and 'Johnsons Yard' (Guisborough).   We also have interests in a further depot in Guisborough, Reid Terrace, which is currently hired out to Coatham Mini Coaches.

The Johnsons Yard Depot was were it all began in many ways.   This was the first depot of the Sissons Motor Service.   The Depot was eventually purchased from its owner, Lord Gisborough (note the different spelling of Guisborough) in 1951, and was expanded during that year.   The Depot expanded again in 1953 and then again in 1964, when it reached the maximum possible size that space permitted, the size it is today. It became evident during the early seventies that with an ever-growing fleet, the SMS were soon going to outgrow Johnsons Yard, so the management had two choices; find a new bigger yard or find an additional yard.   During the next two years both avenues were explored, until the collapse of a neighbouring firm, Colledge Coaches, provided the answer.   Their small depot, Reid Terrace, less than 200 yards from Johnsons yard was purchased and, despite its small size, it was thought suitable to cater for the growth of the business for the next few years.

The next few years, however, turned into the next ten years, and due to underinvestment the two sites were running at full capacity until the senior management "bit the bullet" as it were, and in 1989 commissioned the Cleveland Road site.

The Cleveland Road site is situated on the (then in 1989) newly built Cleveland Road industrial estate, Middlesbrough (about 9 miles south and 15 minutes drive from Guisborough).   The site covers half an acre and was officially opened in 1991 at a cost of three quaters of a million pounds.   The site also includes a former LNER engine shed - which had stood derilict since the closure of the engine yard in 1954 - until we purchased the adjoining site.   The engine shed was slowly converted - keeping the outside unaltered - into a maintainence facility for our fleet.   Johnsons yard was retained as an overflow yard, however Reid Terrace was surplus to requirements.   Just prior to the property being put up for sale, we were approached by a new mini coach company, Coatham Coaches, who needed a depot for their new fleet.   Reid terrace was subsequently leased out to Coatham Coaches.
